Should a website agency build your product configurator?
Compare website delivery with configuration-software delivery by assigning product rules, factory outputs, integration support and ongoing changes.

A website agency may be a good configurator partner when it can deliver and maintain the product logic your business requires. The distinction is responsibility, not the supplier's label. A polished website and a reliable configuration system need overlapping skills, but neither proves that the other has been included in the proposal.
Divide the brief into visible and operational work
Branding, page layout, responsive behaviour and content management concern the customer experience. Product compatibility, price calculations, account permissions and factory handoffs concern the application behind it. Ask who owns each part and which subcontractors or third-party services are involved.
A design prototype can help agree the journey. It cannot prove that an incompatible accessory is blocked or that a changed configuration reaches the ERP correctly. Give each deliverable an acceptance method appropriate to its job.
Follow an ordinary catalogue change
Suppose the manufacturer withdraws a roof option and introduces a replacement with different accessories. Ask the proposed team to describe the update from product decision to website publication. Who edits the catalogue? Who changes the geometry? Which saved projects need review? What tests run before the new choice is available?
This exercise reveals whether the proposed configurator is a maintained product application or a collection of individually coded screens. Either approach may be appropriate for a small scope, but their change costs and operating requirements differ.
| Deliverable | Useful evidence |
|---|---|
| Customer interface | Responsive working journey |
| Product rules | Valid and invalid configuration cases |
| Commercial calculation | Reviewed price examples |
| Integration | Received record and failure recovery |
| Ongoing ownership | Named process for updates and support |
Ask who answers when the order is wrong
The website team, model supplier and integration developer may all contribute to the same project. Agree a single route for investigating a discrepancy. The support process should trace the saved selection, applied rules and exported output instead of asking your employees to prove which supplier caused the problem.
Include administration instructions and an environment handover in the purchase. A software application should not depend on an undocumented account belonging to a departing freelancer. Likewise, do not assume a website maintenance subscription includes changes to manufacturing rules.
Compare proposals against the same business result
Configurix develops custom software around product configuration. A useful discussion starts with the product family, the customer journey and the records your teams need after selection. Ask the same questions of any other proposed delivery team, including an agency you already trust.
Choose on demonstrated capability and a maintainable scope. There is no need to replace a successful website partner if a clear integration allows each team to own the work it does well.
Does the configurator need to be built by our website supplier?
No. Agree branding, embedding, navigation, consent handling and enquiry routing between the teams. The customer should experience one coherent journey even if the delivery responsibilities are separate.
Is a fixed website price enough to compare configurator proposals?
Only when the included application work is comparable. Separate model preparation, product rules, commercial documents, integrations and maintenance so that missing work is visible before signing.
