Sauna bench layouts and materials: building a useful configurator

A sauna configurator is useful when the cabin the buyer sees corresponds to a product the manufacturer can supply. Bench layout and timber selection are central to that connection. They change the appearance, usable arrangement and item specification, so they should not be treated as decorative controls disconnected from the catalog.

Define bench layouts as product options

Record the bench arrangements offered for each cabin family. Distinguish straight, corner or other approved layouts using readable names and stable internal references. Keep the relationship between cabin dimensions and available bench assemblies explicit.

A wider cabin does not automatically mean that every bench can simply be stretched. Your catalog may use modules, different supports or separate assemblies. Those are product decisions for the manufacturer to supply to the implementation team.

Make materials easy to compare

Separate interior lining, benches and exterior cladding where they are independent choices. A single “wood” selector can imply that one material applies everywhere, even when your range uses different options for different surfaces.

Use consistent names and representative material images. Preserve the selected references in the configuration so the quotation identifies more than a color visible in a screenshot.

Keep door and equipment relationships clear

Bench layout, door position and equipment placement belong in the same product specification. Apply the combinations approved for the cabin family; do not infer equipment suitability from a convincing 3D view. Relevant manufacturer documentation should inform the product rules.

Distinguish included parts from upgrades

Explain what the base cabin includes before showing optional upgrades. If a premium bench package replaces the standard assembly, the item mapping should remove the replaced package rather than add both. Apply the same logic to material substitutions.

Use one standard configuration and one upgraded configuration to review the price difference. The salesperson should be able to explain that difference using the selected products, not an unexplained total.
